The National Spring Clean campaign is now under way and hundreds of clean-up events are due to take place in Mayo throughout April. Everyone is encouraged to take part to help tidy up their local area and make it a better, cleaner, place to live.

Congratulations to the Rockvale Residents Association who organised an excellent clean up of the estate last week. Over 20 bags of litter were filled and with the assistance of the Town Council this was collected and disposed of environmentally.

As the Presidential cavalcade drove into the Westport Leisure Centre, a sea of decorative caricatures, flag bearing children, and bystanders who were basking in the lovely weather, greeted Mary McAleese and her husband Martin.

Kilkenny’s litter levels have fallen from moderately littered status to littered this year in the Irish Business Against Litter survey which was published earlier this week.

Fine Gael Councillor Myles Staunton accepted the chain of office on Monday night making him Westport’s new first citizen, with one of his first duties as Cathaoirleach asking that a 20 per cent deduction be made in the Cathaoirleach’s allowance as a symbol reflecting the current economic struggles. The councillor also noted a number of enterprising proposals which he hopes to implement during his term in office which will benefit the town of Westport.

Now that judging season for the Tidy Towns competition is under way all householders, shop keepers, sports clubs, and the general community, are requested to be especially vigilant about litter and the appearance of their premises.

Green Party TD for Carlow/Kilkenny, Mary White, has paid tribute to all the towns in Kilkenny that won awards in the 2009 Tidy Towns competitions, the winners of which were announced on Monday.
